Fish Tails 05/25/21: 1-yr Anniversary … Aloha Seafood

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • Looking for a show of hands if you had an order in for last year’s Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. I know there’s a bunch of you, because it would’ve been our busiest day since the onset of quarantining. As a reminder, you didn’t get your delivery that day because Pier 45 was Up in Flames. The Fire has since been extinguished, so if you need some fishys this Saturday (let’s include Friday too), AND if you had an order placed for a year ago, then let us know, and we will WAIVE your Delivery Fee. (cheaters Will Be Caught and Prosecuted — we have saved every work-order from that day). And because of Memorial Day, Aloha Seafood Will Be CLOSED on Monday, May 31st.
  • Note that Farm’d Atlantic SALMON prices have soared recently, and another bump expected soon. Reason is production problems in Chile due to warm water and algae blooms, (it happens a lot down there), meaning that Canada has to fill the void for huge customers such as China and Walmart, creating a shortage for us lowly customers, so the price goes up. But it also narrows the gap btwn those and our “PREMIUM” Salmons, such as ‘LOCH DUART’ & ‘ORA-KING’ & ‘BIG GLORY BAY’ KINGs.
  • And DUNGENESS CRABMEAT is pretty popular with y’all — Price Up on that one too.
  • A few lbs of FRESH COOKED OR SHRIMPMT came in, and we’re hoping for more.  FRESH Monterey SQUIDLocal (Monterey, Half-Moon Bay) WILD KING SALMON.  And a lot more of da’ stuff that you’ve come to know & love … some re-‘Tail’ below, and Prices attached …
  • Still trying to navigate all this upheaval in our industry around availability and costs. As mentioned, you home-delivery folks still get a great deal compared to regular retail pricing, but this upheaval is a pretty big deal to the food-service sector.
  • Now offering a line of eight of Bristol’s “MY FISH DISH”, a 7-oz thaw, bake, & enjoy seafood entree — GARLIC/HERB/BUTTER SHRIMP & SWEET CHILI-SAUCE SHRIMPBlackened-&-Smoked Butter SCALLOPS or ATLANTIC COD or WILD SOCKEYE SALMON; and Sesame-&-Seaweed Teriyaki on the same three fish. Seems perfect for all of you HDS customers. Give ’em a try!
  • “Del Pacifico” Suripera Blue Prawns are absolutely da’ Best Prawn/Shrimp that can be found. Currently, Disney Corp is their top customer … let’s see if we can join that Mickey-Mouse outfit at the top of the list!
  • Some faves from da’ freezer —  HAMACHI COLLARS / KAMA (2+ lbs per pkg); HAMACHI FILLET (about 5-lbs ea); CHILEAN C-BASS COLLARS … SPANISH OCTOPUS; FZN Cooked/Blanched OCTOPUS TENTACLES (TAKO) about 3# ea, from Hokkaido/Japan, a ‘Hot Special’ at $7.50 … AHI POKE CUBES; SALMON POKE CUBES; FZN ALBACORE LOINS; Sk-Off/BLO FZN AHI LOINS … IQF SMELT; IQF SARDINES; PERUVIAN BAY SCALLOPSOYSTER SPRING-ROLLS; Lots More …
  • Hey, I mentioned that we have a customer who presented their business on ‘Shark Tank’. They Got an Investment!! Check out the April 16th episode, company’s name is Truffle Shuffle.

Fish Tails 5/18/21: Shortie Form … Aloha Seafood

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • Aloha y’all — still trying to navigate all this upheaval in our industry around availability and costs. As mentioned, you home-delivery folks still get a great deal compared to regular retail pricing, but this upheaval is a pretty big deal to the food-service sector. Anyway, hope y’all had a good Mother’s Day — the next one coming is Memorial Day weekend, always a pretty big day for us. As a matter of fact, last year’s Memorial Day could have been remembered as our busiest day since pre- shelter-in-place days … but then the Pier 45 Fire happened, giving us something different to remember.
  • Along with our usual decent selection from Baja/Mexico, (YELLOWTAIL JACK, CORVINA BASS, STRIPED BASS, SoCAL HALIBUT, & ‘Del Pacifico’ PRAWNS), we’ve got some Mex’n KAMPACHI due in this week!!
  • And a nice selection of fishies from Local waters and other global locales … check out the Product/Price List, and a bit of re’Tail’ below … GO DUBS, GO GIANTS!
Fish Tails Post 5/6/21: Fishes for Mom … Aloha

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • Hi y’all, still a coupla’ days to get some goodies from the sea for Mother’s Day!
  • Two items jump out — FRESH NEW LOCAL WILD CA KING SALMON (from Monterey/Half Moon Bay). Just arrived, beauts, I think these fellas were swimming yesterday. Please don’t ask us to PBO, as that process makes for a lousy presentation on Wild Salmon.  And FRESH COOKED OREGON SHRIMPMEAT, first of the season, rated Green by MBAq SeaWatch, we prefer to sell it by the 5-lb tub, (though it may weigh only 4.75 lbs because this item gets nibbled on by us more than any other item). Buy a tub, portion & freeze for later.
  • We almost had some Uni last week for y’all, but we rejected it due to quality, and this week is too windy, but methinks we’re getting closer to some regularity. Stay tuned.
  • Hey, I mentioned that we have a customer who presented their business on ‘Shark Tank’. They Got an Investment!! Check out the April 16th episode, company’s name is Truffle Shuffle.
  • This new world order has got the Seafood industry in turmoil of the likes that I’ve never ever seen before. Limited availability, global shipping issues, gas, etc. have got everything going up in price. Maybe not such a big deal for you guys compared to the restaurant & hotel & catering businesses, because our prices to you are still well below typical retail prices when you compare apples-to-apples. Nevertheless, things have changed. Heck, it wouldn’t be surprising if I was told that the SF Giants have the best record in the NL after 30 games, but that may be a bit far-fetched, huh?
  • Don’t forget to call Mom, and if she’s in a faraway place with poor phone reception, then send out some sweet vibes.
  • Reminder 1) It’s OK to include the eMail addresses that have one of our names in it, BUT PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ALWAYS INCLUDE orders@alohaseafood.net when eMailing/replying with us.

Fish Tails 4/13/21: TV Time … Aloha Seafood

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • Hey, any ‘Shark Tank’ fans out there? … We have a commercial customer called Truffle Shuffle whose business model is a very unique and fascinating home meal “experience”, (sometimes featuring Seafood which they’ve sourced from us), … And They Are Going to be Featured on This Week’s Episode of “Shark Tank”, Friday Evening, April 16th, on ABC. Check ’em out!
  • Also, getting a lotta’ questions from y’all wanting to know our take on the recent Netflix program, “Seaspiracy”… Here is a very powerful, well-researched, and professional rebuttal to that program, which we encourage you to take a look at. https://sustainablefisheries-uw.org/science-of-seaspiracy  Our overall take on this sort of thing boils down to three things: One, the Seafood industry really needs a stronger voice/stronger lobby so that this sort of negative publicity (which occurs too often) blows over. (Mad cow disease was short-lived news, and you rarely hear about the mis-treatment of domestic poultry & cattle). Two — in reality, the biggest problem that the Seafood industry faces is that people don’t eat enough of it. And lastly, when faced with a decision, isn’t it better to be aware of all sides of an issue, so that you can make an intelligent choice based on knowledge, and be comfortable with it?
  • Reminder that Aloha Seafood is back to being OPEN on SATURDAYS again, so you’re all lookin’ at a 6-days-a-week delivery option from your favorite fish-monger!
  • OK, something new! — We’re getting in some FRESH KAMPACHI, farmed, sashimi-quality, closely related to Yellowtail Jack/Hamachi but smaller fillets than the Fzn HAMACHI that you guys buy a lot of.
  • More stuff this week — SoCAL HAL, AK HAL by Thurs, CORVINA, WHITE C-BASS, ROCK & TRUE & BLACK COD, (NO Skrei — over for this year), SWORD, TOMBO, YELLOWTAIL JACK, AHI by Thursday, SALMON x 6, BRONZINI, More, Even More, Lots More … Some re”Tail” below … EAT FISH!
  • Maybe coming soon — FRESH COOKED OREGON SHRIMPMEAT? LIVE/FRESH SOFT-SHELL CRABS? Stay tuned to da’ “Tail”.
  • Reminder 1) It’s OK to include the eMail addresses that have one of our names in it, BUT PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ALWAYS INCLUDE orders@alohaseafood.net when eMailing/replying with us.

Fish Tails 3/30/21: Pranks & New Hours … Aloha Seafood

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • Aloha once more, Glad to be able to inform y’all that we’re back to being OPEN on SATURDAYS again, starting this week, so you’re all lookin’ at a 6-days-a-week delivery option from your favorite fish-monger!  And more — we’re in an extremely rare week that includes four holidays  — the two obvious ones are Good Friday, (which was once a huge seafood-consuming day many years ago), and Easter, … and on Thursday, April 1st, it’s both Opening Day! and April Fools Day, which both need a little boost to be considered high-seafood-consumption days. Anyway, we’ve got some BOLIVIAN SEA BASS coming in this week, and if you order some, then we’ll know that you haven’t read this thing all the way ’til the end …
  • Lately, it seems like more changes than usual on the Price List — not in the right direction — so be aware of that. For instance, WE are now paying over $10 for LIVE Crabs — price up to you, but we just can’t lift it any higher to where we’d like our margins to be.
  • Popular items for that Easter Brunch include ALASKAN HALIBUT, SMOKED SALMON, any of our FRESH SALMON (6 of ’em), SKREI (NORWEGIAN ATL COD), SHRIMP/PRAWNS, IQF SHRIMPMEAT, CRABMEAT, LOBSTERMEAT, SCALLOPS, and da’ list goes on …
  • And a few we haven’t seen much of lately are set to make an appearance this week — HUACHINANGO! (Real MEX’N RED SNAPPERS), Local LING COD!, and YELLOWTAIL JACK.
  • Lots More including PETRALE SOLE, SoCAL & LOCAL HALIBUT … ROCK & TRUE & BLACK COD … SWORDFISH, MAHI, OPAH?, AHI, TOMBO … CORVINA, BRONZINI …
  • OK, lotta’ repeated stuff below this, but the reason I need to explain the piece about Bolivian Sea Bass to you rookies, sorry, I mean you home-chefs, is because you might just order some, not realizing that Bolivia doesn’t have fishing fleet, because it doesn’t have a coastline, it never did, and it won’t have one on April Fools Day either.    Gotcha’.    Happy Easter!
  • Reminder 1) It’s OK to include the eMail addresses that have one of our names in it, BUT PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ALWAYS INCLUDE orders@alohaseafood.net when eMailing/replying with us.

Fish Tails 3/15/21: Aloha Again

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • Appreciate your annoyance about me skipping ‘Fish Tails’ last week, here’s da’ latest:
  • ALASKAN HALIBUT season has begun, and the fish are beautiful. Hoping for consistent supply moving forward, but keep in mind that the allowable catch (quota) stretches out for 9 months this year, so the fishermen will only go out when the conditions are good. The SoCAL/MEX’N HAL are still running strong, too.
  • Here’s one we haven’t had since 2019 — OPAH — this fish is in a category by itself, firm, thick flakes, red meat, grillable, fatty, maybe tastes like a cross btwn SWORDFISH & AHI. Help me out here — any Islanders out there who can enhance that description? Fresh MAHI avail this week, too.
  • The DUNGENESS CRAB catch is really grinding down towards an early end already. Most of the local boats have already pulled in their gear, and there’s just not enough catch up north nor demand down here to warrant bringing any down via trucking.
  • NO Petrale Sole this week — rough weather.
  • Some price increases already showing up due to increased demand around the country/world because of the loosening of Covid restrictions — note your Farm’d ATL SALMON Fil is up a buck. And you probably don’t even wanna take note of where LIVE LOBSTERS & LOBSTERMEAT pricing has gone.
  • BRONZINI  /  COD = ROCK & TRUE & SKREI (Norwegian Atl Cod) & BLACK COD  /  MEX’N PINK GROUPER  /  Lotsa’ SALMON Choices  /  HOKKAIDO DRY-PACK SCALLOPS  /  OYSTERS-CLAMS-MUSSELS  /  Lots MORE — some re-“Tail” below — Keep Eating Seafood!
  • Promote Aloha Seafood! — as we notice an uptick in our restaurant business, we also notice a slight decline in our Home Delivery Service, so here’s how you can help: When you’re out there supporting your local restaurants, ask them who their Seafood supplier is?, and if they reply with the wrong answer … well, good time to mention “Aloha Seafood”! It’s easy. Mahalo.
  • Reminder 1) It’s OK to include the addresses that have one of our names in it, BUT PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ALWAYS INCLUDE orders@alohaseafood.net when emailing/replying with us.  Reminder 2) We’re now Eliminating Home-Delivery Service on Fridays, and we’re still CLOSED on Saturdays for now. Mahalo for understanding.
• Note: if you buy LIVE Crabs, and they don’t seem so alive when you receive them, PLEASE Cook Them BEFORE you tell us that you want Credit for a “dead” Crab — if the Crab has even an iota of life left in its body/nerves, then the muscles will tense up and the meat will be firm when cooked, but if it really indeed was dead before cooking it (which would be unusual), then the meat could end up more like the texture of applesauce — it’s not common, it’s also not harmful, but we get it that it’s not so appetizing, either.
  • Mahalo, it’s meaningful that you’re thinking of us, and we’re extremely grateful.

Fish Tails 3/1/21: Answer & Announcement, Aloha

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • Answer to da’ riddle: There was a pretty successful Broadway stage production about Alexander Hamilton, but he was never a President. Neither was good ol’ Ben Franklin. So there’s Washington (on the $1) and Abe ($5) and Andrew Jackson ($20) and Ulysses Grant ($50) and don’t forget about Tom Jefferson ($2) — that’s  $78.00 worth of Presidential portraits on  American paper currency up to the $100-bill. Final answer. Congratulations to a few of you that got it right! — and if you haven’t already cashed in on our “waive your delivery fee” prize, don’t forget to remind us. Feeling obliged to mention my sister, not because she got it right (she did), but because I forgot to wish her a Happy Birthday.
  • As areas are moving into less-restrictive tiers, we’re announcing a move to squeeze you guys (the Home Delivery sector) in to a 4-day delivery schedule, Monday thru Thursday, eliminating Fridays. Please order accordingly. Pick-ups here at our facility on Pier 45 on Fridays is still OK.
It’s easy. Mahalo.
  • That’s all for today, slightly edited re-“Tail” below, and Price-list attached …
  • SKREI & YELLOWTAIL JACK & SoCAL HALIBUT  /  MEX’N PINK GROUPER & CORVINA will be our “Bass”  /  DUNGENESS CRABS remain day-to-day. SWORDFISH, AHI, TOMBO  /  ROCK & TRUE & BLACK COD  /  PETRALE SOLE  /  DRY-PACK SCALLOPS  /  BRONZINI  /  CLAMS, OYSTERS, MUSSELS  /  CAVIARS  /  CANADIAN ATL SALMON, ‘LOCH DUART’ ATL SAL, NZ KING SAL x 2, STEELHEAD X 2  /  More…
  • Glad to see SKREI again … this is a short-season, highly managed, sustainable fishery of a population of (North Sea) ATLANTIC COD in their migration route to spawning grounds off of Norway. Try it now!
  • Reminder 1) It’s OK to include the addresses that have one of our names in it, BUT PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ALWAYS INCLUDE orders@alohaseafood.net when emailing/replying with us.  Reminder 2) We’re now Eliminating Home-Delivery Service on Fridays, and we’re CLOSED on Saturdays.

Fish Tails 2/22/21: Aloha Seafood

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • I was complimenting y’all for being such loyal readers, but now just ‘crickets’ on the latest riddle. Here it is again: You have one each of American paper currency from the $1-bill through the $100-bill — if you add up all those presidential portraits, how much money do you have?
  • When you’re done doing that math, check out the math of lower prices this week on SKREI & YELLOWTAIL JACK & SoCAL HALIBUT!!
  • Fortunately and somewhat surprising, the recent weather around the country has had little to no effect on our receiving. Looks like CORVINA will be our “Bass” for the early part of this week. Expecting some FRESH MAHI-MAHI this week. DUNGENESS CRABS remain day-to-day — we’ve had days with No Live ones, days with No Cooked ones, but not yet any days with neither. NO Huachinango, NO Striped Bass, NO Uni this week.
  • Lots More, including SWORDFISH, AHI, TOMBO  /  ROCK & TRUE & BLACK COD  /  PETRALE SOLE  /  DRY-PACK SCALLOPS  /  BRONZINI  /  CLAMS, OYSTERS, MUSSELS  /  CAVIARS  /  CANADIAN ATL SALMON, ‘LOCH DUART’ ATL SAL, NZ KING SAL x 2, STEELHEAD X 2  /  Price List attached, re-“Tail” below …
  • Glad to see SKREI again … this is a highly managed, sustainable fishery of a population of (North Sea) ATLANTIC COD in their migration route to spawning grounds off of Norway. Very short season of availability, try some now!
  • Reminder 1) PLEASE check who you’re sending your eMailed orders & comments & questions to. It’s OK to include the addresses that have one of our names in it, BUT PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ALWAYS INCLUDE orders@alohaseafood.net when emailing/replying with us.  Reminder 2) We’re now CLOSED on Saturdays until things pick up again. Mahalo for understanding.

Fish Tails 2/16/21: Riddle Time, Aloha

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • Need to express appreciation that so many of you guys & gals actually read this thing, compared to the relatively small numbers of chefs & purchasers of restaurants, who get another version of “Fish Tails”, that very few of ’em ever read. Example — the short blurb that was sent out last Tuesday about some Fresh Uni coming in — well, we sold out in a matter of a coupla’ hours, was able to increase our order, and we still over-sold (almost 40 trays); ALL except two trays went to you guys, and the two trays that went to chefs were for their home use, not for their restaurants. Mahalo! for reading …
  • And thanks for buying & eating Seafood, too. Super Bowl Sunday and Valentine’s Day were very helpful, and did ya’ know about the other Holiday coming up tomorrow? — It’s called “Pitchers & Catchers Report to Spring Training”, and though it may not be recognized as a National holiday just yet, it’s still as good of an excuse as any to eat fish!
  • And since we’re talking about President’s Day, it’s time to dust off this one: If you had one each of the presidential portraits on American currency from the $1-bill thru the $100-bill, how much money would you have?
  • Here’s some news — We’re guessing that DUNGENESS CRAB availability is gonna get more sporadic than it’s been, order up and hope for the best, and note that the price is up quite a bit … Alaskan HALIBUT season is only a month away! … And some more SKREI are coming in (see below).
  • Bigger HUACHINANGO (2-4s) expected in, too … STRIPED BASS, BRONZINI, PETRALE SOLE, SoCAL HAL, ROCK & TRUE & BLACK COD, SWORDFISH, YELLOWTAIL JACK, WHITE C-BASS, AHI & TOMBO, DRY-PACK SCALLOPS, SALMON x 6, OYSTERS/CLAMS/MUSSELS, Lot’s More …
  • Glad to see SKREI coming back in … this is a very sustainable, highly managed fishery of a population of (North Sea) ATLANTIC COD in their migration route to spawning grounds off of Norway. Very short season of availability, try some now!

  • Check out the “Hot Specials” section of the Price-List, and notice the 16/20 P&D Blue PRAWNS from “Del Pacifico” on the Sea of Cortez — these are Wild, and a rarity in the Shrimp industry, they are caught in one-day outings, with Suripera nets, frozen one time only, and the company has exclusive and hard-to-attain Fair Trade Certification! (We ordered 16/20 Headless Shell-On to replenish our stock, they sent us P&Ds by mistake, discounted the cost, and we’re passing it on to you!) Yes, they aren’t cheap, because of the factors listed above, but “Del Pacifico” are absolutely da’ Best Prawn/Shrimp that can be found. Currently, Disney Corp is their top customer … let’s see if we can join that Mickey-Mouse outfit at the top of the list!

FISH TAILS  — 1) For Thursday we’ll have some of the small 100-gm Trays of UNI from SoCal getting trucked in!! Not too many, so let us know. They’ll be $35/tray.  2) To see what else is happening, see yesterday’s “Tail”.  3) It’s probably in your “Deleted Items” folder … ’til next time, Aloha  …
  • Aloha!  Lookin’ to have another pretty good week with Valentine’s Day coming up, so get creative with some seafood and let us know what kinda’ romantic dinners are coming out of your kitchens … Pictures are nice, leftovers are nicer.
  • Popular seafood items on the V-Day menus of fine dining establishments typically include LIVE LOBSTERS, LOBSTER TAILS, OYSTERS, CAVIAR, SCALLOPS, & SALMON. Let Aloha Seafood be your one-stop shop for any/all of the above, but you’ll need to shop elsewhere for your bottle of Champagne.
  • Some more HUACHINANGO (1-2s) coming in this week … and BRONZINI & MEX’N STRIPED BASS also make a real nice whole-plate presentation.  More FRESH Monterey SQUID expected in, too.  And Pt.REYES/TOMALES BAY OYSTERS are available again after a week off.

  • Reminder 1) PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ALWAYS USE orders@alohaseafood.net when emailing/replying with us. Always. The reason is when/if you place your order by replying back Only to This eMail or Only to Lloyd or to Kaiser, Mike, etc, then your reply comes back Only to That Individual, and your message may get “lost”, and not get forwarded to our “control center”.  It’s quite OK to include me, or Mike, or Lloyd, Kaiser, etc. … but Please Always Include orders@alohaseafood.net also.
