Fish Tails 2/8/21: Valentine’s Day Fish Issue … Aloha Seafood

FISH TAILS  — 1) For Thursday we’ll have some of the small 100-gm Trays of UNI from SoCal getting trucked in!! Not too many, so let us know. They’ll be $35/tray.  2) To see what else is happening, see yesterday’s “Tail”.  3) It’s probably in your “Deleted Items” folder … ’til next time, Aloha  …
  • Aloha!  Lookin’ to have another pretty good week with Valentine’s Day coming up, so get creative with some seafood and let us know what kinda’ romantic dinners are coming out of your kitchens … Pictures are nice, leftovers are nicer.
  • Popular seafood items on the V-Day menus of fine dining establishments typically include LIVE LOBSTERS, LOBSTER TAILS, OYSTERS, CAVIAR, SCALLOPS, & SALMON. Let Aloha Seafood be your one-stop shop for any/all of the above, but you’ll need to shop elsewhere for your bottle of Champagne.
  • Some more HUACHINANGO (1-2s) coming in this week … and BRONZINI & MEX’N STRIPED BASS also make a real nice whole-plate presentation.  More FRESH Monterey SQUID expected in, too.  And Pt.REYES/TOMALES BAY OYSTERS are available again after a week off.
  • Glad to see SKREI coming back in … this is a very sustainable, highly managed fishery of a population of (North Sea) ATLANTIC COD in their migration route to spawning grounds off of Norway. Very short season of availability, try some now!
  • Other Cods in da’ ice this week are ROCK COD & TRUE COD & BLACK COD  /  WHITE C-BASS  /  SWORD, AHI, TOMBO, YELLOWTAIL JACK  /  SoCAL HAL & PETRALE SOLE  /   MUSSELS & CLAMS  /  CRABS? & CRABMEAT  /  Lots More …
  • Seeing signs in our crystal ball that re-opening on Saturdays is getting closer to reality — Still Not Yet, but stay tuned to da’ “Tail” for further developments …
  • Reminder 1) PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ALWAYS USE orders@alohaseafood.net when emailing/replying with us. Always. The reason is when/if you place your order by replying back Only to This eMail or Only to Lloyd or to Kaiser, Mike, etc, then your reply comes back Only to That Individual, and your message may get “lost”, and not get forwarded to our “control center”.  It’s quite OK to include me, or Mike, or Lloyd, Kaiser, etc. … but Please Always Include orders@alohaseafood.net also. Reminder 2) We’re now CLOSED on Saturdays until things pick up again. Mahalo for understanding.
  • Note: if you buy LIVE Crabs, and they don’t seem so alive when you receive them, PLEASE Cook Them BEFORE you tell us that you want Credit for a “dead” Crab — if the Crab has even an iota of life left in its body/nerves, then the muscles will tense up and the meat will be firm when cooked, but if it really indeed was dead before cooking it (which would be unusual), then the meat could end up more like the texture of applesauce — it’s not common, it’s also not harmful, but we get it that it’s not so appetizing, either.
  • Now offering a line of eight of Bristol’s “MY FISH DISH”, a 7-oz thaw, bake, & enjoy seafood entree — GARLIC/HERB/BUTTER SHRIMP & SWEET CHILI-SAUCE SHRIMPBlackened-&-Smoked Butter SCALLOPS or ATLANTIC COD or WILD SOCKEYE SALMON; and Sesame-&-Seaweed Teriyaki on the same three fish. Seems perfect for all of you HDS customers. Give ’em a try!
  • Check out the “Hot Specials” section of the Price-List, and notice the 16/20 P&D Blue PRAWNS from “Del Pacifico” on the Sea of Cortez — these are Wild, and a rarity in the Shrimp industry, they are caught in one-day outings, with Suripera nets, frozen one time only, and the company has exclusive and hard-to-attain Fair Trade Certification! (We ordered 16/20 Headless Shell-On to replenish our stock, they sent us P&Ds by mistake, discounted the cost, and we’re passing it on to you!) Yes, they aren’t cheap, because of the factors listed above, but “Del Pacifico” are absolutely da’ Best Prawn/Shrimp that can be found. Currently, Disney Corp is their top customer … let’s see if we can join that Mickey-Mouse outfit at the top of the list!
  • Some faves from da’ freezer —  HAMACHI COLLARS / KAMA (2+ lbs per pkg); HAMACHI FILLET (about 5-lbs ea); CHILEAN C-BASS COLLARS … SPANISH OCTOPUS; FZN Cooked/Blanched OCTOPUS TENTACLES (TAKO) about 3# ea, from Hokkaido/Japan, a ‘Hot Special’ at $7.50 … AHI POKE CUBES; SALMON POKE CUBES; FZN ALBACORE LOINS; Sk-Off/BLO FZN AHI LOINS … IQF SMELT; IQF SARDINES; PERUVIAN BAY SCALLOPSOYSTER SPRING-ROLLS; Lots More …

Fish Tails 2/1/21: First of Feb, Aloha Seafood

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • OK, I mentioned that this was coming, and the timing is now right for this juicy little tidbit: The Pt. Reyes/Tomales Bay area is home to a lotta’ dairy cows, and seasonal rains, as well. The run-off from the rains, (which includes what the cows dropped in the grass), flows into the shallow bay. And Oysters do a great job of cleaning up their environment because they are filter-feeders. You get the picture — A full three days after it stops raining is when the State tests the water for absence of natural toxins such as E.coli. If an Oyster operation in West Marin has the capacity to “wet-store” a week or two worth of Oysters, then great, but in this case, we will NOT have any Pt.Reyes Miyagi Oysters this week.
  • Now that we’ve got you lickin’ your lips … there’s an opportunity for a few “new” ones this week — FRESH Monterey SQUID (inconsistent availability ’til June, so jump on it), and HUACHINANGO (real “Red Snapper” from MX, 1-2#ers), which we haven’t seen for a while, that’ll be swimming in with some MEX’N WHITE C-BASS. More from down south — YELLOWTAIL JACK!!  And TOMBO is back in da’ ice again!! Furthermore, we’re trying to secure some SKREI (migrating sub-population of Atlantic Cod off of the coast of Norway) for next week in time for Valentines Day.
  • Take note: price hikes on DUNGENESS CRABMEAT & 5/6-oz Cold-water LOBSTER TAILS. And “mahalo” to a few of ya’ who helped us blow through some Ground/Minced Ahi — None more available, and None more coming in.
  • Not too early to give us a heads-up about your Lobster & CAVIAR needs for Valentines day.
  • Day-to-day on whether we’ll have either Live and/or Fresh Whole-Cooked CRABs or neither — just keep the orders coming in.  More: ROCK & TRUE & BLACK COD  /  MEX’N STRIPED BASS & BRONZINI  /  PETRALE SOLE & SoCAL HAL  /  SALMON x 6  /  AHI & SWORDFISH  /  DRY-PACK SCALLOPS  /  Lotta’ SHELLFISH & Lots More & re”Tail” below …

Fish Tails 1/27/21: Another ‘Tail’ … Aloha Seafood

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • Just know that even though there’s new protocols that lessen restrictions for dining out, we have no plans to diminish or phase out you guys, the home-chefs, whose support has been such a critical part of our success. So keep eating fish!
  • And thanks for telling your friends & fam about us — always surprised by how many weekly additions we get on this mailing list. Welcome newbies, enjoy some “Tail”.
  • Not much news to report — the DUNGENESS CRAB season is a flop — normally a big influx by now of the bigger & better critters from Eureka, Crescent City, and Oregon hitting the markets, but they’re struggling to catch anything up there, too — Now offering FRESH COOKED CRABS for the same price as LIVE ones, they’re mmm-mmm good!
  • This week’s inventory: SALMON x 6 … Bass = MEX’N PINK GROUPER & MEX’N STRIPED BASS … PETRALE SOLE … SoCAL HALIBUT … BRONZINI … ROCK & TRUE & BLACK COD … AHI (but still NO Tombo) … SWORDFISH … DRY-PACK HOKKAIDO SCALLOPS … OYSTERS/CLAMS/MUSSELS (great time of year for shellfish) … lot’s more…
  • If your favorite restaurant isn’t serving LOBSTERS for Valentines Day, you can always get ’em from us!
  • Last call for our GROUND/MINCED AHI — gettin’ real low, and we ain’t buyin’ any more.
  • Below is a few bullet-points from previous issues of da’ “Tail”, which we call re-“Tail”… Prices attached … Stay hungry & stay healthy …
  • This one seems to come up quite often — “Which fish are sashimi-quality, are safe for raw consumption?” — Simplifying it just a bit, most all of our products can be and have been consumed raw. Seafood items that are Frozen adhere to the (never enforced) regulation that “items consumed raw must have been frozen at some point in the process”. Live ShellFish (Oysters/Clams/Mussels) which are purchased on a commercial basis (not recreationally harvested) are under very strict guidelines for absence of toxins. (More about that in a future issue when it’s been raining a lot). As for Fresh Seafood, you may feel safer with Farmed products such as Salmon or Striped Bass, because they are not susceptible to natural pathogens & parasites as Wild species sometimes are. And if you do come across a worm in your Halibut or Rock Cod, just realize that it will not present a health hazard if consumed, and furthermore, we didn’t charge you anything extra for that extra morsel of protein!

Aloha Seafood’s Fish Tails 1/19/2021

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • OK, not offering up any excuses and we’ll spare you all the details, but let’s just say that we’re real sorry if our execution on Friday caused any inconvenience or hardship to many of you. Hope it all ended up well.
  • This has got to be the most uneven start to a Crab season that I can ever remember — first of all, the huge processor that was involved in the pricing negotiations hasn’t bought a single pound of local Crabs yet. The fishermen are staying out longer because the initial catches are not enough volume/weight to come in. Then when they do come in, they’re not unloading until they get paid more money. Then most of those Crabs are going to China, (because they’ll pay). Then there’s some cooked Crabs from up north that arrived in the Bay Area on Monday, and we get a notice from OR Fish & Game that those Crabs haven’t cleared inspection yet, so they’re “on hold” (don’t know how they even got on a truck without proper test clearances). Haven’t even mentioned rough weather yet. Needless to say, the price that was published on last week’s price-list was good for about 37 seconds, maybe less, and there’s still too much “volatility”, so no published price quote on this weeks list.
  • Other than that, the news that Crab season has started has brought us another wave of “new” folks — Aloha to all you “newbies”, appreciate your interest, enjoy some “Tail”.
Reminder 2) — We’re now CLOSED on Saturdays until things pick up again. Mahalo.
  • SALMON x 6 … MAHI … Bass this week is MEX’N PINK GROUPER … SoCAL HAL … BRONZINI & STRIPED BASS … ROCK & TRUE & BLACK COD … Lots More, but still NO Tombo … some more re-‘Tail’ below …
  • Here’s how it works: The Crabs from our local waters typically average less than 2-lbs each, but at the onset of the season, and also because the season is starting so late,  we may see a good amount of ’em that weigh in heavier, perhaps 2.25 to 2.5 lbs. Best for us if you order by-the-piece — figure a Crab per person is about right — if you’re light eaters, you’ll have some left over for the next day or three; if you’ve got a big appetite, then add an extra Crab or three on to your order. I may be an expert on Crabs, but you’re on your own as far as which sourdough makes the best garlic bread, or which wine to serve. Last note: if you buy LIVE Crabs, and they don’t  seem so alive when you receive them, PLEASE Cook Them BEFORE you tell us that you want Credit for a “dead” Crab — if the Crab has even an iota of life left in its body/nerves, then the muscles will tense up and the meat will be firm when cooked, but if it really indeed was dead before cooking it (which would be unusual), then the meat could end up more like the texture of applesauce — it’s not common, it’s also not harmful, but we get it that it’s not so appetizing, either.
  • Added two more to our “My-Fish Dish” line!! — GARLIC/HERB/BUTTER SHRIMP & SWEET CHILI-SAUCE SHRIMP. Bristol’s “MY FISH DISH” is a 7-oz thaw, bake, & enjoy seafood entree. We’re offering EIGHT of ’em — Blackened-&-Smoked Butter SCALLOPS or ATLANTIC COD or WILD SOCKEYE SALMON, and Sesame-&-Seaweed Teriyaki on the same three fish, plus the two SHRIMP dishes mentioned above. Seems perfect for all of you HDS customers. Give ’em a try!
  • A pound of Crabmeat is equivalent to 4# of Whole Crabs, about two nice-sized Crabs. CRAB SECTIONS are Crabs in the shell, without the back shell or any guts/innards, just the body sections with legs attached, what you’ve probably enjoyed at your yearly charitable Crab Feeds. About a pound of these would be the equivalent of one nice Crab. We have NO Fzn WHOLE Crabs.
Fish Tails 1/11/2021: Crabs R Coming … Aloha Seafood

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • First, the good news — From our vantage point here on Pier 45, there’s a line of boats heading out through the gate to drop their Crab traps in da’ sea! On Wednesday morning, they’ll pick ’em up, and if the traps are full of critters, then We WILL Have LIVE DUNGENESS CRABS for Thursday! … and there oughtta’ be FRESH COOKED CRABS by Friday!!!  Here’s how it works: The Crabs from our local waters typically average less than 2-lbs each, but at the onset of the season, and also because the season is starting so late, we may see a good amount of ’em that weigh in heavier, perhaps 2.25 to 2.5 lbs. All that needs to occur now is the weather cooperating so the boats can get out & in. Oh, one more last thing — could be some fluctuations on the pricing to start off, but the price-list is a good guesstimate for now.
  • Here’s the not-so-good news — We rejected shipments of Fresh AHI and Fresh TOMBO this morning, and all of our primary sources have none to offer us at this time. We’re hoping for some later in the week, price will likely jump. Our Frozen AHI LOINS (5-8 lbs ea), Fzn AHI SAKU BLOCKS (1# ea), and Fzn LOCAL ALBACORE LOINS (1# ea) are all Skinless & No Blood-Line, are always gaining traction in popularity, and are all Sashimi-Quality. … And still a lotta weather up North, so there’s NO Petrale Sole for now, we don’t expect our next ROCK COD until Wednesday, we’ll probably need to slack out some BLACK COD as our Fresh inventory is real low, and we think you’ll really like our AK TRUE COD Fillets. The moral to da’ story is that Wild Fish Availability & Wintertime Weather just aren’t always a good match.
  • A few jars of the CA ‘ROYALE’ CAVIAR on hand … also SALMON x 6 … BRONZINI … SoCAL HAL … CORVINA BASS … Lots More … some re-‘Tail’ below …
  • I should find some time in the next coupla’ weeks to update the Terms/Abbreviations and the FAQs in the attachments and on our website — stay tuned. I may even have time to clean up my desk area, too.  Reminder of last week’s announcement that we’ll be Closed on Saturdays until in makes sense to open again. And another friendly reminder to PLEASE ALWAYS USE orders@alohaseafood.net when emailing/replying with us. Always. The reason is when/if you place your order by replying back Only to This eMail, then your reply comes back Only to Me, and because I’m not always sharp enough to notice that sorta’ thing, your message may get “lost”. It’s quite OK to include me, or Mike, or Lloyd, Kaiser, etc. … but Please Always Include orders@alohaseafood.net also. Mahalo.
  • No Crabs, but know that we have D. CRABMEAT, BLUECRAB BACKFIN MT, Fzn CRAB SECTIONS, KING CRAB LEGS & CLAWS, SNOW CRAB COCKTAIL CLAWS, and/or LIVE LOBSTERS, LOBSTERMEAT, & LOBSTER TAILS. And to answer a common inquiry lately — Yes, we will sell the Lob Tails by the piece; they’re 5/6-oz each, so about 3 pcs per lb, at $38 per lb.
  • — (A pound of Crabmeat is equivalent to 4# of Whole Crabs, about two nice-sized Crabs. Fish Tails 1/4/21: First 2021 ‘Fish Tails’ … Aloha Seafood

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • Happy New Year everyone, grateful you’re all with us, and as a matter of fact, you home chefs will continue to be a major segment of our business as long as our restaurants & food-service customers are still facing limitations … so keep eating seafood!
  • Except Crabs — still No start to this Crab season, (high seas this week, so the boats wouldn’t be able to get out anyway), and now with the three biggest Crab days behind us, the processors will have even less incentive to meet the fishermen’s asking price. And be careful with those Washington crabs you may have seen in the markets for $18/20 per lb — they’ve been recalled due to elevated levels of domoic acid.
  • OK, traditionally the three biggest Crab days are Thanksgiving, X-Mas & New Years — but who can tell me what are the three biggest restaurant/dining out days of the year?
  • Hey, find a reason to celebrate! — we’ve still got a few jars of the CA ‘ROYALE’ CAVIAR on hand … also SALMON x 6 … BARRAMUNDI & BRONZINI … SoCAL HAL … BLACK COD / TRUE COD / PETRALE SOLE … Lots More …
  • I should find some time in the next coupla’ weeks to update the Terms/Abbreviations and the FAQs in the attachments and on our website — stay tuned. Mahalo.   Some re-“Tail” below …
CRAB SECTIONS are Crabs in the shell, without the back shell or any guts/innards, just the body sections with legs attached, what you’ve probably enjoyed at your yearly charitable Crab Feeds. About a pound of these would be the equivalent of one nice Crab. We have NO Fzn WHOLE Crabs).
  • Here’s one with your morning coffee — Do know why Santa allows Prancer and Dancer to drink coffee??  Because they’re his Star Bucks.
  • Also a good time to ask your nieces/nephs/kids/grandkids “Do you know how to make an Octopus laugh?” When they give you that puzzled look, you answer “Just give it ten-tickles”.   dah-dum.

Fish Tails 12/29/20: Announcement & Last 2020 ‘Fish Tails’

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • Still gettin’ a lot more new names on this list; matter of fact, this “Home Delivery Service” list now has more contacts than our “Food Service – Chefs & Purchasers” list, and waaaay more readers. Enjoy some “Tail”.
  • Gotta’ make the inevitable announcement that Aloha Seafood is going to be Closed on Saturdays,😢, starting this week, (so this week we’ll be Closed on both Fri & Sat, Jan 1st & 2nd, re-opening on Monday, Jan 4th). Order accordingly, and we will re-open on Saturdays when it makes sense to do so. Thanks for understanding.
  • Also closed is the commercial Dungeness Crab season — the fishermen & processors are still bickering over price, and they’re not even close to an agreement, so there will be NO Crabs this week — but get yer orders in for D.

  • CAVIAR with yer Champagne on NYE? — Every year for us this is a difficult determination to know how much to purchase — hopefully we got ya’ covered.
  • Still dealing with some weather & holiday-related shipping issues, but we think we’ll be OK on most items:  SALMON x 6 — SMOKED SAL & SMK’D TROUT — HOKKAIDO SCALLOPS — CLAMS/MUSSELS/OYSTERS — SHRIMP/PRAWNS (be specific on specs, please)  — BRONZINI — Lots More …
  • You guys know the drill, Product/Prices attached, some re-“Tail” below (including the recent jokes), and we just wanna express our appreciation and huge Mahalos! for what your segment of our business has meant to us in 2020 — Happy New Year!

Fish Tails 12/22/20: X-Mas Story, Aloha Seafood

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • Fergeddabout what we’ve been tellin’ y’all about Crabs for X-Mas — but first, just wanna say “Aloha” to the greatest influx of new folks on this list since we created the original list, way back in March. Hey newbies — you’ll be gettin’ some “Tail” every week now!
  • If you’ve already ordered Live or Fresh-Cooked Dungeness Crabs for this week, or if you’re just about to get yer order in, sorry, but it’s not gonna happen. The fishermen and the processors are very far apart on settling on a price, the Crab traps need to be in the water already, but they’re still stacked high on the asphalt here on da’ Pier. Not meaning to pour salt on the wound, but we’ve heard from one guy that we’ll be lucky to have ’em for New Years.
  • Here’s some reasonable options for you:  DUNGENESS CRABMEAT, available in 1# tubs or 5# cans, and much cheaper BLUECRAB BACKFIN MEAT, in 1# units — A pound of Crabmeat is equivalent to 4# of Whole Crabs, about two nice-sized Crabs. CRAB SECTIONS are Crabs in the shell, without the back shell or any guts/innards, just the body sections with legs attached, what you’ve probably enjoyed at your yearly charitable Crab Feeds. About a pound of these would be the equivalent of one nice Crab. We have NO Fzn Whole Crabs, but plenty of KING CRAB LEGS & CLAWS and SNOW CRAB COCKTAIL CLAWS in our Freezer. Maybe you wanna do Lobsters instead? — We offer LIVE LOBSTERS (let us know what size?), and 5/6-oz LOBSTER TAILS, and LOBSTER MEAT, all product of Maine/Canada/North Atlantic.
  • Reminder that Aloha Seafood will be Closed on Friday, Dec. 25th, and the following Friday, Jan. 1st.
  • Other than labor negotiations, we’re dealing with weather, weather-related shipping snafus, and holiday-related shipping problems … meaning expect there may be some N/As (not available) and/or “subs” on your orders this week. For instance, we’re OUT of Rock Cod, and True Cod is “lost” somewhere. Choices on HOKKAIDO SCALLOPS are just U/10s, with a few U/15s (another “lost” shipment).
  • OK, I haven’t talked about coffee yet, but do know why Santa allows Prancer and Dancer to drink coffee??  Because they’re his Star Bucks.
  • And newbies, if you didn’t like that one, then avoid the re-“Tail” section below.
  • OK, Prices attached, Re-“Tail” below, and have a Very Merry and Un-crabby X-Mas!
  • More popular stuff this time of year includes:  SMOKED SALMON (and remember, we have the 3.5-oz “retail” packs now)  /  CAVIAR (a few different choices)  /  CLAMS & MUSSELS (for yer Ciopinno! — and let us know what time dinner’s ready!)  /  SHRIMP/PRAWNS (be specific on specs, please)  /  FRESH Salmon = ‘LOCH DUART’ as mentioned above, & CANADIAN ATLANTIC SALMON and NZ’s ‘BIG GLORY BAY’ KINGS & ‘ORA-KING’ and STEELHEAD/OCEAN TROUT x2  /  and lots More …
  • Friendly Reminder: PLEASE ALWAYS USE orders@alohaseafood.net when emailing/replying with us. Mahalo.
  • Now offering OCTO LEGS/MADAKO as a ‘Hot Special’ at $7.50 per lb. These are blanched/par-boiled and weigh in at approx 3# per tentacle. This would be a good time to ask your nieces/nephs/kids/grandkids “Do you know how to make an Octopus laugh?” When they give you that puzzled look, you answer “Just give it ten-tickles”.   dah-dum.
Fish Tails 12/15/20: Crabby Christmas … Aloha Seafood

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • OK, here’s how it’ll probably play out — you’ve probably already heard or read that the Local DUNGENESS CRAB season will finally open, but not until December 23rd. That allows the fishermen to pull the crabs outta’ da’ water at midnight, but by the time they get back into port, it’ll likely be too late in the day for our sales to you, … so figure on the 24th (Thursday); there should be both Live and Fresh-Cooked available … now we just keep our fingers crossed for good weather (so the boats can get back in in a timely manner), and an agreement on price between the fishermen & processors (so there’s no labor strike).
  • And a reminder that Aloha Seafood will be Closed on Friday, Dec. 25th, and the following Friday, Jan. 1st.
  • The “LOCH DUART” Premium Atl/Scottish SALMON will be back in our inventory starting tomorrow/Weds!
  • Friendly pricing on MAHI-MAHI this time of year…
  • Now offering our OCTO LEGS/MADAKO as a ‘Hot Special’ at $7.50 per lb. These are blanched/par-boiled and weigh in at approx 3# per tentacle. This would be a good time to ask your nieces/nephs/kids/grandkids “Do you know how to make an Octopus laugh?” When they give you that puzzled look, you answer “Just give it ten-tickles”.   dah-dum.
  • Typically big movers during the next coupla’ weeks include: DRY-PACK HOKKAIDO SCALLOPS  /  SMOKED SALMON (remember, we have the 3.5-oz “retail” packs now)  /  CAVIAR (a few different choices)  /  CLAMS & MUSSELS (for yer Ciopinno! — and let us know what time dinner’s ready!)  /  SHRIMP/PRAWNS (be specific on specs, please)  /  LIVE LOBSTERS, LOB TAILS, LOBSTERMEAT  /  DUNGENESS CRABMEAT  /  FRESH Salmon = ‘LOCH DUART’ as mentioned above, & CANADIAN ATLANTIC SALMON and NZ’s ‘BIG GLORY BAY’ KINGS & ‘ORA-KING’ and STEELHEAD/OCEAN TROUT x2  /  and lots More …

Fish Tails 12/8/20: Riddle Time – Aloha Seafood

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • With the latest restrictions on dining out, we’re expecting all you home chefs to be a real important part of our holiday success — here’s da’ scoop:  First off, know that our days of NON-Operation will be Friday, December 25th and Friday, January 1st (and a reminder that we’re Closed on Sundays). We’re still more than 2 weeks out, but remember to order accordingly.
  • Still NO “Loch Duart” Premium Atl Salmon (see last week’s ‘Tail’), but we expect to have ’em by late next week, and into the X-Mas week. Other available ATL SALMON are from BC/Canada, and our other “premium” Salmon are the ‘BIG GLORY BAY’ & ‘ORA-Kings’ from NZ.
  • Now offering our OCTO LEGS/MADAKO as a ‘Hot Special’ at $7.50 per lb. These are blanched/par-boiled and weigh in at approx 3# per tentacle. This would be a good time to ask your nieces/nephs/kids/grandkids if they know how to make an Octopus laugh. They won’t know the answer, so you tell ’em “just give it ten-tickles”.  dah-dum.
  • Don’t have a definitive word yet on the opening of the Local Crab season. Flyover assessments of the whale situation will be conducted this week, still hoping that it’ll get started by Dec 15th, and if so, the wholesalers who have been bringing Crabs down from Canada will end that practice right now because they don’t want unsold expensive inventory on their hands when the new (and much cheaper) local crabs show up. More on this subject below in re-‘Tail’, call us for the latest updates, stay tuned to da’ ‘Tail’.
  • Bass this week will be CORVINA & MEX’N Farm’d STRIPERSAHI & TOMBO & SWORDFISH & MAHI-MAHI on da’ menu … SoCAL HALIBUT & PETRALE SOLE … Cod = ROCK & TRUE & BLACK CODDORADE/SEA BREAM LIVE LOBSTERSOYSTERS-CLAMS-MUSSELS DRY-PACK SCALLOPS … Lots More
  • As far as I know, ‘Hanukah’ isn’t a bay in Hawaii, (even though the word contains letters from the Hawaiian alphabet), but rather a holiday which begins Thursday nite — Happy Hanukah!
  •  Well, the start of the season for Local Dungeness Crabs remains on hold because the potential still exists for a whale to get entangled in the gear. Today has historically been the opening of the Northern season (Eureka, Crescent City, Oregon), which is when things really kick into gear, but unfortunately, that too has been delayed, not because of whales, but because of low percentages of meat to total body-weight. Crabs molt, and it takes time to grow into their new shell, and the critters are still too “light”. Another tidbit you should know is that it’s typical in the first two weeks of December for stores to run their loss-leader ads for Crabs — that’s when they sell Crabs at cost, or even below cost, (but they make up for it when you bring that loaf of sourdough and bottle of grape-juice through the check-out line), hence “loss leader”. Anyway, could be the ads have already gone to print, and with No Fresh-Cooked Crabs available, they’ll be selling Frozen (or recently thawed) Crabs from last year’s harvest. Buyer beware. Lastly, there actually have been a few Crabs a week coming down from Canada lately, which are waaaay too pricey for grocery store ads, but there is a slight possibility that we could have a crab or two or six for your orders.
  • NEW — We now have 3.5-oz pkgs of Cold-SMOKED (Lox) NZ KING SALMON if you’d like! Give ’em a try! Our full sides (2-4 lbs) of Sliced SMOK’D SAL are still available too.
  • Bristol’s “MY FISH DISH” is a 7-oz thaw, bake, & enjoy seafood entree. We’re offering six of ’em — Blackened-&-Smoked Butter SCALLOPS or ATLANTIC COD or WILD SOCKEYE SALMON, and Sesame-&-Seaweed Teriyaki on the same three fish.
  • While yer scrolling through the ‘click heres’, check out the new “Gift Certificate” one.

Mahalo.
