Fish Tails 9/22/20: Grizzly Bears … Aloha Seafood

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • It’s another Tuesday “Tail”-day … this list continues to grow; spread da’ word; Mahalo!
  • “Bristol”, who is our DRY-PACK SCALLOP supplier, and da’ very best Scallop producer that we’ve ever dealt with, is now offering “My Fish Dish” — a 7-oz thaw, bake, & enjoy seafood entree. We’re offering six of ’em — Blackened-&-Smoked Butter SCALLOPS or ATLANTIC COD or WILD SOCKEYE SALMON, and Sesame-&-Seaweed Teriyaki on the same three fish. Seems perfect for all of you HDS customers. Give ’em a try!
  • Local & Wild news: Looks like we’ll have some more UNI this week, avail by Thursday, yell LOUD & yell Now. Looks like another week with LOCAL ALBACORE! And some LOCAL CALIF. HALIBUT is avail (with a shipment of AK HAL due in for Thursday). BLACK COD & ROCK COD (with LING & TRUE COD for Thurs) & PETRALE SOLE. What about Local KING SALMON you ask? — We’re about to get in to the last week of the season, only trickles have been coming in of late, let’s hope for a strong finish — none currently in stock, stay tuned. There are King Salmon being offered to us from Canada & AK, but those are now gill-netted river fish, which we tend to stay away from. Once Salmon have entered the rivers, on the way to their spawning grounds, the quality goes south. It’s just like Oysters and other seafood — when fish are in the mood for lovin’, they’re not so appetizing anymore. Unless you’re an Osprey or a Grizzly Bear.
  • ONO  /  SWORDFISH  /  AHI  /  WHITE C-BASS  /  BRONZINI  /  Lotta’ SHELLFISH, Lotta’ FZN, Lots MORE
  • ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  • TOMBO vs Albacore — they are both White Tuna, not Ahi, and they are the same species. When young, the fish known as Albacore follow the North Pacific/Japanese current, and this is the time of year when they pass by Calif & OR; small fish, delicate & soft meat, very fatty, definitely in the top three of my favorite-est fish! Then the fish get older, (and bigger, and firmer-fleshed), and also much wiser, so they decide to retire to the easy life of Hawaii/Fiji/South Pacific, they change their name to Tombo, and some of ’em end up as a center-of-the-plate entree at fine dining establishments, and not-so-lucky ones end up in a can labelled “white tuna” or “premium cat food”.
  • Another discussion point that came up recently has to do with COOL (Country of Origin Labeling), which is meant to be informative, but in fact is very misunderstood, because it’s very misleading and not informative. A classic example is Frozen Alaskan Cod, which may caught by a Vietnamese fisherman on a Portuguese-flagged boat out of Vancouver, B.C. (Canada), fishing in Alaskan (USA) waters, and unloading the catch onto a Chinese-owned factory-at-sea ship, who then processes the fish that’s featured in your McFish sandwiches … and AK Cod is considered a “Product of China”. We know that the fish aren’t required to show their passport when swimming across borders, but there’s never been an AK Cod anywhere near China. But what if this fish (or any other) is labelled “Product of USA?” — That too is very uninformative, as the USA could mean AK or Hawaii or Maine or Florida or Texas or Calif — all different waters, all different ecosystems.
  • Add a box of Fresh Produce to your Seafood order! We’re partnering with C & L Produce, a highly reputable wholesale distributor out of Oakland, to bring a variety of fresh fruits & veggies into your home. This offering is as an add-on, and not a replacement for our $100-minimum seafood order. Click on the two new buttons.
  • So the demolition & clean-up of what remained from the Pier 45 Fire has been progressing quite nicely, leaving us with a greatly expanded view of da’ Bay, which is a reminder that if you’re in da’ City, access on to Pier 45 is a lot easier now, so c’mon by to pick up your order.
  • We carry a few brands of SMOKED SALMON, all are ‘nova style’ (Lox), all are sliced (cater-cut), all are about 3 to 4# per side. Easy to break down into smaller units for yer freezer, then thaw ’em when you need ’em.
  • Some of your faves from da’ freezer —  HAMACHI COLLARS / KAMA (2+ lbs per pkg); HAMACHI FILLET (about 5-lbs ea); CHILEAN C-BASS COLLARS; FZN Cooked/Blanched OCTOPUS TENTACLES (TAKO) about 3# ea, from Hokkaido/Japan; SPANISH OCTOPUS; AHI POKE CUBES, SALMON POKE CUBES, MINCED/GROUND AHI, OYSTER SPRING-ROLLS; FZN ALBACORE LOINS, & Sk-Off & BLO FZN AHI LOINS; IQF SARDINES; PERUVIAN BAY SCALLOPS; Lots More …
  • PLEASE ALWAYS USE orders@alohaseafood.net when emailing/replying with us. Always. And our website is www.alohaseafood.net.

Fish Tails 9/15/20

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • All you home-delivery folks should be real proud of yourselves for gettin’ along so well without any “Tail” for the last coupla’ weeks … I’m back again for more. Anybody know how to make an Octopus laugh? Why sure, you just give it “ten-tickles”.  And to all of you brand new readers, this is as good a time as any to opt out.
  • So the demolition & clean-up of what remained from the Pier 45 Fire has been progressing quite nicely, leaving us with a greatly expanded view of da’ Bay, but due to the poor air quality lately, today is really the first day that there is actually a new view to take in. Which is a reminder that if you’re in da’ City, access on to Pier 45 is a lot easier now, so c’mon by to pick up your order, enjoy our view, and ask us about our NEW Ready-to-Cook Seafood Entrees — There’s three fish: NORWEGIAN COD or WILD SOCKEYE SALMON or NEW ENGLAND SCALLOPS (Bristol’s iconic brand), done either Sesame Seaweed/Teriyaki style or Blackened/Butter style … Try all six! Check out da’ Price-List.
  • Seasons are winding down on Local CA KING SALMON & Local ALBACORE, so if you haven’t had your fill, don’t wait much longer. Some real nice Local BLACK COD in da’ house, and there should be some Fresh Mendocino UNI in by Thurs or Friday.
  • ONO & SWORDFISH & AHI  /  WHITE C-BASS & Farm’d STRIPED BASS  /  HALIBUT x 2  /  ROCK & TRUE COD  /  Farm’d SALMON x 6  /  Etc, etc. — you know the drill — check out da’ Price List & other attachments, and a reprint of some previous stuff below, which is known as re-“Tail” … and Go Giants!
Fish Tails 9/1/20

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • Aloha all, here’s another exhilarating issue of da’ “Tail” … and it’ll be the last issue for a coupla’ weeks as this author is gonna take some time off.
  • Also note that our entire staff is gonna take a day off on Monday, Sept. 6th, as Aloha Seafood will be CLOSED for Labor Day. Use Friday/Saturday to load up for all your picnic/party seafood needs.
  • Local WILD KING SALMON would be awfully nice on da’ grill. Should be avail all week, as we start the final month of the season.  Fresh LOCAL ALBACORE is great for sashimi or great with a quick sear on da’ grill … Which brings up the answer to your confusion/questions about TOMBO vs Albacore — they are both White Tuna, not Ahi, and they are the same species. When young, the fish known as Albacore follow the North Pacific/Japanese current, and this is the time of year when they pass by Calif & OR; small fish, delicate & soft meat, very fatty, definitely in the top three of my favorite-est fish! • Michelle P out there in home-delivery-ville already knows that we’re bringing in some Fresh UNI this week, and now the rest of y’all know too. It’ll be avail by Thursday (prob’ly), so yell now & yell loud if ya’ want some!
  • NEW ITEMs especially for our HDS folks (all of you) — from “Bristol” — Pre-portioned 7-oz Frozen ready-to-cook seafood meals — There’s six choices: NORWEGIAN COD or WILD SOCKEYE SALMON or NEW ENGLAND SCALLOPS (Bristol’s iconic brand), all three either Blackened w/Butter or Sesame Seaweed/Teriyaki … try all six! Check out da’ Price-List. Order accordingly.
  • Expecting some ONO in for Thursday … BLACK COD/SABLEFISH lookin’ good — ROCK & LING & TRUE COD too … LOCAL & AK HALIBUT in da’ ice … Farm’d Salmon = STEELHEAD x2, ATL x2, & NZ KINGS x2 … AHI & SWORDFISH … WHITE C-BASS … PETRALE SOLE … DRY-PACK SCALLOPS … CLAMS/MUSSELS/OYSTERS … and a lot more …
  • Click below for Product/Price List … if you wanna keep reading, here’s some re-“Tail”.

  • Some of y’all asking about picking up your order, rather than getting a delivery to your door — Yes, that’s definitely an option that’s available to you now, because they’ve eased the restrictions to get on to Pier 45 since the Fire. Parking is still a fuster-cluck, but c’mon on down to pick-up your order, quintuple-park for a few minutes, check out our facility and the S.F seafood industry & culture. And we’ll waive the $100-minimum and the $10 service-fee.

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • OK, a few tidbits for y’all — first, Aloha to the new readers of “Fish Tails”, and Aloha to the not-so-new too.  Haven’t shown much of my Giant’s fanaticism lately because, well, if you don’t have anything nice to say, it’s best to say nothing at all.
  • As it swelters around here, there’s big swells outside, so as it stands right now, there’s NO Uni this week, we’ll be thawing out BLACK COD, and we may be exclusive on having some Local WILD KING SALMON, which’ll disappear quick (is which’ll a word?), with none more expected in this week. As always, stay tuned for updates.

  • Top Choices: BAJA ‘Pacifico’ STRIPED BASS — PETRALE SOLE — TOMBO … and first-of-the-season LOCAL ALBACORE! — Lot’s More …
  • Pt.Reyes Oyster Co has some mechanical problems, Marin Miyagi Oyster Co won’t be able to ramp up production quick enough to completely fill the void, (and they’re more costly), so expect some BC and/or WA ‘subs’ on your OYSTER orders this week.

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • Quickie — Surprise, Surprise! — Some FRESH UNI came in!! And re-‘Tail’ from Tuesday is below …
  • Some have asked “Why can’t I get Local Wild King Salmon even though it’s in season?” — Well, if it’s “in season”, that means it’s a wild animal, because farmed seafood would typically never be “out of season”, and if it’s wild, that means availability is dependent on Mother Nature. Interesting to note that seafood is the extremely rare commercially-available protein (or even plant) that may be Wild. Anyway, LOCAL WILD KINGs are due in later this morning, so have at ’em!!
  • Prob’ly not gonna have Uni again this week — it’s another Mother Nature thing. But it’s looking good for a lotta’ Local fish, including FRESH SQUID; PETRALE SOLE; HALIBUT x3; COD x4 incl. BLACK COD; From down south, YELLOWTAIL JACK & WHITE C-BASS & HUACHINANGO (RED SNAPPER); Farm’d stuff from nearby includes B.C ATL SALMON, WA STEELHEAD, IDAHO TROUT, most of our MUSSELS, CLAMS, & OYSTERS are West Coast, and Check Out our REAL (not hybrid) STRIPED BASS, farmed off of the Pacific side of Baja!
  • From more distant shores: DRY-PACK SCALLOPS  /  BRONZINI  /  AHI & TOMBO & ONO  /  SWORDFISH  /  NZ ‘BIG GLORY BAY’ KING SAL & ORA-King SAL  /  ‘LOCH DUART’ SAL & ‘LOCH ETIVE’ STEELHEAD  /  more …
  • NEW! (to you guys) — PERUVIAN BAY SCALLOPS — avail in 1# IQF units, a “Dry” Scallop like our others, smaller meat (60/80-ct) with a much smaller price!

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • ‘Aloha’ to regular readers of da’ “Tail”, and a lotta’ new ones, too … gonna be a few limitations on availability this week due to windy conditions out there — Sea Urchin hang out close to the shore & rocks, making it too dangerous for the divers (and their boats) when it’s rough, so NO Uni this week. Just a little bit of Local WILD KING SALMON in da’ house, with none more confirmed yet for later this week. Stay tuned. We do have ‘BIG GLORY BAY’ and ‘ORA-KING’ SALMON, Great ‘subs’, highly recommended & suggested. Looks like there’ll be NO Local Halibut either, but we do have ALASKAN HAL available, with some SoCAL HAL due in for tomorrow. ROCK COD Fil may get tight, but we have faith that our buyer, Robi, will find some more. And with NO Fresh Black Cod being landed, we’ll continue to process Fillets from thawed H&G BLACK COD.
  • PETRALE SOLE lookin’ good. Same with FRESH SQUID. TRUE COD by tomorrow & LING COD by Thurs. From down south, MEX’N RED GROUPER/(BAQUETTA) & YELLOWTAIL JACK.
  • We carry a few brands of SMOKED SALMON, all are ‘nova style’ (Lox), all are sliced (cater-cut), all are about 2.5 to 4# per side. Easy to break down into smaller units for yer freezer, then thaw ’em when you need ’em.
  • More Fresh Stuff = SWORDFISH  /  ONO due in  /  AHI & TOMBO  /  Farm’d ATL SAL x2 & STEELHEAD x2; (Frm’d KINGs mentioned above)  /  BRONZINI & STRIPED BASS  /  DRY-PACK SCALLOPS  /  MUSSELS-CLAMS-OYSTERS  /  Lots More …
  • Still strong inventory on some of your faves from da’ freezer — adding IQF SARDINES to that list, along with  HAMACHI COLLARS / KAMA (2+ lbs per pkg); HAMACHI FILLET (about 5-lbs ea); CHILEAN C-BASS COLLARS; FZN Cooked/Blanched OCTOPUS TENTACLES (TAKO) about 3# ea, from Hokkaido/Japan; ASIAN & SPANISH OCTOPUS; AHI POKE CUBES, SALMON POKE CUBES, MINCED/GROUND AHI, OYSTER SPRING-ROLLS; FZN ALBACORE LOINS, & Sk-Off & BLO FZN AHI LOINS; Hot Special on 26/30 OG PRAWNS; Lots More …

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • Aloha, just a few quick updates … and it’s only been two days since the previous ‘Tail’, yet there’s still a bunch of new add-ons to this list — Welcome all!
  • It looks like we Will Have some more UNI again this week, avail on Friday, yell now & yell loud! … ‘Twas a nice low price for a week or so, but the White C-Bass have disappeared for now, none coming in, so our ‘Bass’ will be MEX’N GROUPER/CABRILLA … Got some more large (2/4s & 4/6s) HUACHINANGO (Mex’n Snapper) coming in … Price down even more on Local WILD KING SALMON! … more for your re-reading pleasure below …
  • Here’s a little something that comes up pretty often with you home-delivery customers, so let me address it — When you order multiple varieties of Oysters, sometimes your choices include both Pt. Reyes Oysters and also “Miyagi” Oysters. When you say “miyagi”, we assume you’re asking for ‘Marin Miyagis’, because the word “miyagi” is part of its name. But actually, Almost All of Pacific Oysters are the same species, and almost all of our West Coast varieties are of that same species, originally introduced from Japan, and which is now common terminology to refer to them as “miyagis”. We may call ’em Fanny Bays or Totten Inlet or Little Skookum or Pickering Passage or Royal Miyagi (there’s that word again), or countless others, but they are ALL ‘miyagis’ (except for Kumamotos). And just so you know, ‘Marin Miyagi’ and ‘Pt. Reyes’ Oysters come from the same area, Tomales Bay, and their beds actually touch each other. Yes, you can actually reach out of one side of the boat and pull up some ‘Pt. Reyes’ Oysters, and on the other side of the boat is the ‘Marin Miyagi’ acreage. So if you’re looking for a different flavor profile with your multiple choices for oysters, you ain’t gonna get it with those two. Perhaps you’ve also heard of “Hog Island” Oysters? — We don’t (and can’t) sell them to you (that’s another story), but they are also the same oyster, from the same water, with the same taste, just a different name. Just recently, the price has gone up on ‘Marin Miyagi’ Oysters, compelling us to buy less from them, but not so on ‘Pt Reyes’, so we’re using more of them.  Bottom line, if you do order both varieties, you should probably expect us to “sub” some “TodaysBest” for you, or maybe some Aloha’sChoice”, which are real nice varieties with a slightly different taste profile than the ones from Tomales Bay, and they’re similarly priced.
  • Remember that YELLOWTAIL JACK & WILD KING SALMON pricing has dropped. Farm’d ATLANTIC SAL, too. Got some ONO in da’ ice. Remember to use orders@alohaseafood.net, please.
  • BRONZINI makes a nice whole-fish presentation for one, and if it’s for two or more, check out our HUACHINAGO (real Red Snappers from Baja) and our Frm’d STRIPED BASS.
  • More in da’ cooler:  PETRALE SOLE  /  ROCK, LING, TRUE, & BLACK COD  /  AK & LOCAL & SoCAL HALIBUT  /  SQUID  /  SWORDFISH  /  AHI & TOMBO  /  SALMON = ‘LOCH DUART’ & NZ KINGS x 2 & STEELHEAD x 2  /  MUSSELS-OYSTERS-CLAMS  /  Lots More …
  • One of your faves, HAMACHI COLLARS (KAMA), is again available. And we’ve added a ‘new’ item — FZN Cooked/Blanched OCTOPUS TENTACLES (TAKO), about 3# ea, from Hokkaido/Japan. Appreciate your loyalty to CHILEAN C-BASS COLLARS & AHI POKE CUBES, SALMON POKE CUBES, FZN ALBACORE LOINS, & Sk-Off & BLO FZN AHI LOINS. Still strong freezer inventory on:  MINCED/GROUND AHI  /  ASIAN & MEDIT. OCTOPUS  /  OYSTER SPRING ROLLS  /  26/30 & 16/20 OG PRAWNS  /  Lots More ~~~

Fish Tails 7/21/20

FISH TAILS — HDS

  • Seems like I spend more time adding new folks to this list than actually composing a weekly “Fish Tails” for y’all — That’s not a complaint; it’s a WOW and a MAHALO!  Keep ’em coming! Let your friends & fam know about us!
  • Maybe that jumbo-sized teddy bear in the stands at the Giants/A’s game had too much to drink, or he has to get up early like we do, because how else could one doze off during the first professional sporting event for the Bay Area in a thoundred-and-eleven-teen days — Go Giants!! Go baseball!
  • Hey, some pretty nice price reductions on Local WILD KING SALMON, WHITE C-BASS, YELLOWTAIL JACK, and SWORDFISH.
  • OK, we’re gonna give some UNI another shot this week — due in for Friday — Yell Now & Yell Loud! (to orders@alohaseafood.net, please).
  • BRONZINI makes a nice whole-fish presentation for one, and if it’s for two or more, check out our HUACHINAGO (real Red Snappers from Baja) and our Frm’d STRIPED BASS.
  • More from da’ west coast:  PETRALE SOLE  /  ROCK, LING, TRUE, & BLACK COD  /  AK & LOCAL & SoCAL HALIBUT  /  SMELT  /  SQUID

  •  You may have noticed that the AHI POKE CUBES are a different brand now — same 1# units, slightly different “cut” – let us know how you like ’em!  Plenty of CHILEAN C-BASS COLLARS for now, but you may wanna jump on ’em before all of us employees drain our inventory because they’re so dang yummy.  While we’re in da’ freezer, our FRZN Local ALBACORE LOINS (about 1# ea), or our FRZN AHI LOINS (Sk-OFF & BLO, about 5-7#ea) have been very popular.
  • “New”:  SALT SPRING Is. MUSSELS are a hybrid Mussel from B.C. that are large and plump and delicious and sustainably raised and are available once again after a yearly shutdown during their spawning cycle.
  • Still strong freezer inventory on:  MINCED/GROUND AHI  /  ASIAN & MEDIT. OCTOPUS  /  OYSTER SPRING ROLLS  /  26/30 & 16/20 OG PRAWNS  /  Lots More ~~~
  • We’ve noticed (since the fire) that access on to Pier 45 is a lot easier, so if you wanna drop by to pick-up your order and say ‘hi’, just let us know.
  • Survey — How many of you would have an interest in receiving a box of produce which would be piggy-backed onto your seafood order? We’re collaborating with a reputable local Produce distributor, need to gauge the interest. Let us know!
